Fiona Caldwell opened Copper Glacier in April 2017 after spending four years as a senior colourist in London. The name came from a photograph she kept above her station: a snowfield in the Japan Alps shot at low autumn light, the ice running copper and amber. She wanted the salon to feel like that image, something unhurried, something with depth. The first few months were genuinely hard. She had two chairs, one junior assistant, and a waiting list that took nine months to build. She did not advertise. She relied on the work being good enough that people talked.

Fiona Caldwell trained at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London before spending four years as a senior colourist at a well-regarded salon in London. She moved back to Tokyo in 2016 and opened Copper Glacier the following spring, drawn by the idea of building a slower, more considered practice than the high-volume city floor she'd come from. She holds advanced certifications in Balayage and Olaplex bond-building treatments, and she still takes every new client consultation herself. Outside the salon, she grows dahlias and is quietly obsessed with the chemistry of hair pigment.
